A Tale of Black and White

Another day means another opportunity to wonder why we ever started this project.  ...er, I mean, another day means another opportunity to close in on the finish line.  Having left the day yesterday taking credit for work that would really get finished today starts things at a disadvantage.  Knowing that, things had to shift into high gear so that I could really hose the boss (Hi Wife!) into having only the choicest of tasks left to be done.

With that in mind, the first order of business was to close out yesterdays tasks.  With the appropriate tools (a wrench!) tightening the fittings on the faucet presented no real issue.  Of course, things could still go to pot, because there isn't a chance the water will actually get turned on.  I'm dumb, but not that dumb.  For that to be done, I'd at least like to see a functioning drain in place.  ...and that means putting in a garbage disposal, a dishwasher, ...I think you get the idea: It's gonna wait a bit.

After that, the idea was to tackle an outside task (finishing the scraping of the windows) before it got hot.  At this point, it also seems prudent to bring up the fact that my brother (we'll call him BH), claimed earlier this year that it's been a relatively mild summer.  MY BUTT!  It took me approximately 18 seconds before I was completely covered in sweat.  Have I mentioned how much I love it here?  Surprisingly enough though, once the task was done I couldn't help but notice that we have neighbors! (that's a joke about how one can see out the windows now)

Figure 1.  Look, glass!

Figure 2.  Look closely, more glass!

The next easiest task on the list was presumed to be spraying the fireplace.  To do a proper, white glove type job, it seemed to make sense to remove all of the schmutz (translation: debris) from within the fireplace before spraying.  During that (potential gross alert), a small skeleton might've been vacuumed up.  I can't confirm, hell, it might've been ash, but I swear I saw some sort of prehistoric, fossil-esque, rodent-like skeleton.  I'll have the boss (Hi Wife!) empty the shop vac and confirm (another easter egg hunt!).

With that all cleaned out the spraying was relatively uneventful, though I did likely contract a case of black lung.  WOOF.  Between the spray paint and the death and decay that was spread around (see also: turds), my immune system's gonna need to pick it up.

Figure 3.  Looks fake, right?

As stated in the caption, with the firebox sprayed black, the "logs" look almost photoshopped.  I can neither confirm nor deny this "fact".  Also of note, I've never thought as long and as hard as I did about log placement as I did to create the photo you see above.  So much stress!

Having yinned (removing the white paint) and now yanged (painting the firebox black) it only makes sense to yin again.  So, the rest of the day was spent with paintbrush in hand to do a sloppy job painting trim.  Luckily for me, by the time the boss (Hi Wife!) sees it, I'll be long gone.  ...at work, don't get too excited.

Now it's time for a flipper PRO-TIP for you:  If you're going to use any kind of moulding with a silly little lip or skinny face on it, by all means DON'T!  Or, if you must, paint it beforehand.  ...because painting floor moulding's 1/8" upper face is just a stupid, stupid waste of time.

Figure 4.  So much trim.

Figure 5.  Now that's a delicate touch!

Problem with painting trim is that you can't help but find everything else that needs paint.

Figure 6.  ...like bathroom closet doors

Figure 7.  ...like a bathroom window.

Figure 8.  ...and a kitchen window.

Ok, well, I painted that, I swear I did, but I forgot to take a picture of it, so that'll have to do.  That's basically what it looks like, no drips, no brush strokes, just beautifully applied trim paint.

Figure 9.  Front door, window trim, and floor moulding

Figure 10.  ....aaaaannndd sunroom floor moulding and window trim (with everything that used to be on the wood floors that needed to be moved for the floor people on Wednesday!)

That'll have to do for now because the weekend's over.  But, to ensure you keep tuning in you should be able to see newly refinished floors this week!  After that, all that's left is the little stuff (I hope)!
